What’s the Difference Between Polyurethane, Shellac Finish and Lacquer FinishesWhat’s the difference between Polyurethane, Shellac and Lacquer?

There are many misconceptions on the differences and similarities between Polyurethane, Shellac and lacquer. Our experts at Union Hills Ace Hardware Store in North Phoenix, AZ understand the positives of each finish and will help you decide what is right for you and your project.

Let’s start off with polyurethane. It is a clear, hard finish that protects and will beautify interior wood surfaces such as furniture, cabinets, moldings, and doors. It is among the most durable coatings for wood protection. Polyurethane’s long-lasting protective finish makes it ideal for use on both finished and unfinished wood. Polyurethane takes a while to dry. In most light applications it can take 3-4 hours to dry.

Next let’s look at shellac. Shellac finish has been used by woodworkers since the early 1800’s. It has many advantages: shellac is non-toxic, can be used as a sealer before applying a stain (to even out the stain’s application), can be mixed with nearly any color, and is very easy to repair in the event of damage from use. Unlike polyurethane, shellac dries incredibly fast which can be difficult if you are not used to applying it.

Finally let’s discuss lacquer. Lacquer finishes provides a tough, durable and water-resistant clear finish. Today’s lacquers are available in both spray and brush-on styles, but both have the advantage of being among the fastest-drying of all woodworking finishes. Brushing a lacquer finish requires a little more time and effort, but is probably a little bit cleaner than spraying.
