Five Steps to a Great Arizona Winter Lawn

How To Grow A Successful Winter Lawn In ArizonaAt Union Hills Ace Hardware in North Phoenix, Arizona, we know how to grow a successful lawn!  It’s so important to begin preparation for overseeding in mid-September to mid-October and our Lawn and Garden specialists in Phoenix, AZ can help you with that.

Here are some great lawn and garden tips:

Arizona Winter Lawn Preparation:

1.  Little by little lower mowing heights over each mowing cycles until your reach 3/4″ with a rotary mower or 1/2″ with a reel mower.  When the glass is dry use a thatch rake, power rake or verticutter to remove thatch, this allows the rye seed to reach the soil.

Arizona Winter Lawn Grass Seed Planting:

2.  Apply seed rye grass at a rate of 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

3.  Sow seed either by hand or use a mechanical spreader for even coverage.

4.  Apply a starter fertilizer to the soil after the seed has been put down.

5.  Cover the seed and fertilizer with a topping to retain moisture and hide the seeds from the birds.

 Arizona Winter Lawn – Precipitation:

The grass seeds must be kept moist to germinate.  Set your sprinklers to water 3 to 4 times a day, six to eight minutes per session.  After the seed has sprouted adjust your watering based on temperature and wind conditions.  When grass is fully established, in about 28 days, decrease watering to every 3 to 5 days for 25 minutes, this will vary depending on temperatures and natural precipitation.

For an all-in-one overseeding like Scotts Turf Builder EZ Seed Winter Lawn:

Arizona Winter Lawn Preparation:

Prepare winter lawn in Arizona by cutting back dormant grass.  Drop your mowing height as low as possible ad cut two or three times.  Rake away clippings between each mowing to loosen and expose surface soil.  Thatch your lawn to allow for proper germination conditions.

Apply Grass Seeds:

Spread your prepared lawn with easy-to-use seed.  Simply sow by hand or use a spreader for even coverage.  Depth should not exceed 1/8″

Water the Winter Arizona Lawn:

Immediately water easy-to-use seed and the soil until saturated.  Keep moist by watering 2-3 times daily, for 5 to 10 minutes until seedlings are at least 1″ tall.  Adjust watering to prevent puddling.
